Ayonna’s Story

Ayonna first started experiencing mental health issues at the age of 9 years old. She struggled with intellectual disabilities and mental disabilities that primarily affected her growth and development.  If Ayonna had been born with physical disabilities she would’ve been provided wrap around services and her family would’ve been surrounded with support. But because her illness presented behavioral and safety issues she was often treated harshly and unfairly even by the ones closes to her.

Ayonna lost her life by suicide in an inpatient facility on April 11, 2021 at the age of 13.

The Yonna Foundation for Mental Health Advocacy and Support Inc. was established in 2022 as a foundation to provide supportive services and resources to adolescents at risk of suicide and their families as well as the families of those recovering from the suicide of a sibling or child.
